An old Renfrew scale converted for use as a coffee table - a unique piece of Canadian history with a practical modern use!
These were big heavy grain scales of wood and cast iron, used to weigh loads of up to 2,000 lbs (one ton), including corn, grain, potatoes and animals on farms, and large packages at train stations. Originally this scale had a wood top, but it was removed due to its condition, and replaced with glass, which gives a clear view of the cast iron underside of the scale.
The glass top is not included in the price because there's a chip in it - but you can have it for free if you want it. The price is specifically for the scale and its original hardware, and is quite a good value for this historical item. The scale is in good condition but needs a bit of cleaning and basic TLC. The brass hardware is marked with "Renfrew Scale Co. 1911" , with weight numbers and some other manufacturing marks.
